Off to Savannah

I’m leaving tomorrow morning for Savannah, GA to attend the SLA Leadership Summit. Keynote speaker is Stephen McGarvey.

I will also officially start my term there as Chair of the Information Technology Division. It will be my first visit to this Southern Belle of a city and I’m really looking forward to it.

A quick note about the speaker tonight at SLA: Gwen Ifill, Washington Week Managing Editor and senior correspondent for The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer.

Ms Ifill spoke about on the current state of Journalism. An interesting observation was how the huge growth in news sources intensifies the public responsibility to choose competent outlets. Ifill spoke how her experience in journalism helped her learn the difference between skepticism and cynicism. She pointed out that journalists, not just politicians, need to held responsible for what they report.

The call for papers for the SLA-ST and SLA-ENG joint contributed papers sessions for the SLA annual conference in Baltimore in 2006 has been extended until Tuesday, November 15th.
