Particularly interesting, and new, is the “popular passages” search, the subject headings, the ability to clip and paste from public-domain works and the personalization options now offered via “My Library” with a Google account. There’s also the links to Worldcat (which I find myself using more than my own library catalog now.) All in all, without mentioning the copyright issues, Google Book Search does get better and better.

A little late, but interesting reading, ARL published mid-February a statement to publishers regarding research libraries and the global economic crisis. The document lists a few of the effects the economic crisis has on research libraries:

current and future -possibly permanent -budget cuts

cancellation of ongoing commitments

bigger preference of electronic over print

shortening of “long tail” collection development

changes in pricing models, which affects mostly negatively the bigger institutions.

ARL then makes recommendations to scholarly publishers about pricing, contract terms and renegociation, swith to electronic only, archiving, open access, and consultation with libraries.

This free website is an “analytical online tool for discerning trends, patterns and subject experts within scientific research.”

Currently, AuthorMapper.com searches over three million journal articles to deliver a variety of useful information. The current searchable content is from all Springer journals, and metadata from other STM publishers will be included in the near future. The tool can provide a variety of analyses, such as keyword tag clouds and “Top 5″ bar charts for various important metrics, and includes an interactive world map of the results. AuthorMapper.com’s advanced search function also allows complex queries using keyword, discipline, institution, journal and author. The results can identify new and historic scientific trends through timeline graphs and bar charts of top statistics, allowing for identification of trends in the literature, discovery of wider scientific relationships, and locating other experts in a field of study.

Physics Today Offers Online Access to Institutions

Physics Today subscribers will have the option to access an online backfile with their 2007 subscription for an additional US$200 fee. Institutional subscribers who choose this option will have access from 2001 to all but the most recent 12 months of the magazine; current contents remain a benefit to member subscribers. The PT backfile is included in the AIP Archival and AIP Archival Plus combination subscriptions; the backfile is also available as a separate online-only subscription. AIP plans to digitize all issues back to the magazine’s launch in 1948, eventually creating a complete Physics Today digital archive.

AIP to Launch First Open Access Journal by January 2007

AIP introduces Biomicrofluidics, the first title in its new series, AIP Access X-Press. This will be a series of Open Access, online-only journals, featuring rapid publication times.

Two AIP Journals Offer Selected Content in Separate Formats

Applied Physics Reviews, long a distinct section within Journal of Applied Physics (JAP), will also have separate online-only distribution in 2007. (Subscribers to JCP and JAP will continue to receive all this content with their regular subscriptions.) Applied Physics Reviews includes a backfile of review articles back to 1980.

New Topical Collections Available from AIP Conference Proceedings

Previously available only as print standing orders, the topical subseries within the AIP Conference Proceedings program will now be available as separate online-only subscriptions. Subseries include Accelerators and Beams; Astronomy & Astrophysics; Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics; Nuclear & High Energy Physics, Mathematical and Statistical Physics; Plasma Physics; and Materials Physics & Applications. Each series includes all published content from 2000 to the present.

AIP Revises Tiered Pricing System

In 2007, AIP will move to a six-tier pricing system, in part to reduce the large price differences between the highest tiers in the current system. Some accounts from Tier 4 will be moved to the new Tier 5, while all accounts previously in Tier 5 will be relabeled as the new Tier 6. Librarians at affected institutions will be notified directly.

Backfile Enhancements

Reference links are being added to the backfiles of AIP archival journals. In 2007, all abstracts back to 1991 will include these links to cited articles.

If you have a question regarding your institution’s AIP tier assignment, or about the prices posted, please contact subs@aip.org or call 1-800-344-6902.

We look forward to serving you in the new subscription year.

I’m back from Baltimore, tired but happy with the conference. I hardly posted on EngLib; my entries appeared on the Information Technology Division blog where they were more relevant.

But there were nonetheless many interesting sessions pertaining to sci-tech information and many exhibitors in the Hall (I even got the impression that they actually outnumbered the business people this year but I have no hard data on that). Since others have already posted interesting news before, let me just link to their excellent posts, instead of trying to start from scratch:

Paula Hane, of the Information Today blog, talked about Springer’s new e-book collection

. Stephen Leary did the same on the SLA Conference blog.

Dick Kaser, of Information Today, posted about the access to e-books from Wiley Interscience (including pay-per-view). At Knovel, the books will be soon searchable by chemical structure.

Terri Vogel, on the ACS blog, posted about the sci-tech Poster Session

Doug Storm, of the same blog, posted about ACS pricing

Of course, the SLA-PAM blog has good postings on all things of interest to the Division

Finally, and maybe this will have nothing to do with science or engineering, SAGE is announcing a new e-reference collection but would not give me details until ALA in New Orleans has passed. ??!! Why then advertise it on their exhibitor mailcard?

The Journal of Applied Physics is celebrating its 75th anniversary and its 100th volume. More than 94 000 articles have been published in its pages, from its creation in 1931 as Physics under the auspices of the American Physical Society, to the present times under the direction of the American Institute of Physics. To note, it is also the AIP’s 75th anniversary.

A selection of highly cited papers published in the last seven decades has been made available at http://jap.aip.org/jap/75th/sample_articles.jsp. Influential articles from AIP’s other peer-reviewed journals, and from Physics Today and other AIP magazines, have also been made freely available in conjunction with the AIP 75th anniversary celebration. With each article is a concise introduction to explain its contribution to the fields of physics and related sciences.

In late March, the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) and the Institution of Incorporated Engineers (IIE) formed a new organization, the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).

This change is said to bring no significant change in IEEE Xplore, apart from a few journals and conferences changing their names.

Did you <a href="http://www.springer.com/sgw/cda/frontpage/0,11855,4-113-2-171470-0,00.html" target=new">lose your electronic access to the Encyclopedia of Mathematics through Springer? Here is what Springer suggests as a solution:

Recently Springer announced that the Encyclopedia of Mathematics, edited by Dr. M. Hazewinkel, would not be available via SpringerLink during our platform migration. We sincerely apologize not only for the disruption in service, but also for the delay in providing a solution and timely communication.

In response to concerns from customers and the library community, we are pleased to announce that this title will be made available for existing customers via a separate server.

All institutions that are entitled to access the 2002 version, ISBN 1-4020-0609-8 will be contacted with the appropriate URL and access instructions. Customers that have requested a CD-ROM will also be contacted and will have the option to access via the server.

We are, at present, developing an entirely new mathematics encyclopedia and once this is accessible via SpringerLink, we will alert customers of its availability for purchase.

We certainly hope that this will remedy our customer’s concerns and allow librarians to serve their patrons. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

With Regards,
