Issues in Science and Technology Librarianship (www.istl.org) is an open access journal published by the Science and Technology Section of ACRL. We are recruiting new members for our panel of referees.

ISTL publishes substantive material of interest to science and technology librarians. It serves as a vehicle for sci-tech librarians to share details of successful programs, materials for the delivery of information services, background information and opinions on topics of current interest, and to publish research and bibliographies on issues in science and technology libraries.

Authors submitting articles for ISTL may choose to have their articles accepted by the editorial board, or may submit them for review by referees.

We are currently seeking new members for our panel of referees. We are particularly interested in librarians willing to review articles across a range of disciplines within science and technology librarianship. The refereed articles editor will work with the new referees regarding ISTL policies and criteria for review.

If you are interested in becoming a referee for ISTL or would like more information, please contact our refereed articles editor:

shortening of “long tail” collection development

changes in pricing models, which affects mostly negatively the bigger institutions.

ARL then makes recommendations to scholarly publishers about pricing, contract terms and renegociation, swith to electronic only, archiving, open access, and consultation with libraries.

The Association of Research Libraries’ Digital Repositories Task Force released its final report earlier this year. The Research Library’s Role in Digital Repository Services is freely accessible on the ARL website. It does not concentrate on content or technology but simply on the services in general.

Important actions that research libraries should undertake include the following:
• Build a range of new kinds of partnerships and alliances, both within institutions and between institutions.
• Base service-development strategies on substantive assessment of local needs rather than blindly replicating work done at another institution.
• Engage with key local policy issues and stakeholders to encourage institutional engagement with national and international policy issues.
• Develop outreach and marketing strategies that assist “early adopters” of repositories to connect with the developing repository-related service system.
• Define a scope of responsibility to guide the development of repository services for varied forms of content.

It is part of my Library’s strategic plan to produce a repository prototype. It’s a bit of a daunting task but I believe the benefits are real.

This division is committed to improving the quality of teaching and research at academic institutions by promoting collaborative opportunities between information professionals and the larger academic community. While other divisions are concerned with specific subject areas, the Academic Division covers topics of a general nature relevant to all academic librarians from all subject disciplines.

Members can join now by renewing their membership online.
The first Chair is Stacey Greenwell who spearheaded the efforts to create the Academic Division.
I think this is great news for SLA as it may bring in new members who may have the erroneous impression that the association members are only corporate or government librarians (on the contrary). While I greatly and truly value my exchanges with librarians in other environments, it will be nice to add some academic-centric programs and activities to my conference scheduling. I will be adding this Division to my membership.
